The Eunos Roadster is a RHD Miata The U.S. Never Got

I love Mazda Miatas, and I know I’ve said that in almost every article I’ve reviewed. So when I got the opportunity to drive a right hand drive version, I jumped at the opportunity. This is what it’s like to drive a Mazda Miata on the wrong side.

Eunos was Mazda’s luxury brand only sold in Japan during the 1990’s. Mazda wanted to sell luxury vehicles, but the name Mazda didn’t carry the same weight as Lexus and Acura. So Mazda created Eunos, to sell their spec’d up vehicles, most notably being the Eunos Cosmo. But to expand their range of vehicles, Eunos rebadged Miatas and sold them as Eunos Roadsters. That being said, the Eunos roadster has the same drivetrain as a miata. The roadster has a 1.6L inline four-cylinder engine and five speed transmission. Normally the 1.6L isn’t fast, but this specific roadster had been turbo charged with an aftermarket kit, so it was a little quicker.

The Roadster’s interior is just like any other miata, but with a couple tweaks. Eunos added a wooden Nardi steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake handle. Nardi is a manufacturer of aftermarket parts, but these wooden accents come on the Eunos from the factory. The other obvious difference is the fact that the steering wheel is on the right hand side. For some reason, the pedal box felt more crammed than it does in a left hand drive Miata. Maybe I’m not used to it, but my legs felt crammed.


The Eunos Roadster is a cool little car that most people don’t know exist. It’s like the McDonalds secret menu of cars. It’s a shame that we never got these high trim level Miatas in the US, but I’m glad I got to drive one.
