The 2018 Chevy Malibu Spys On You!

We live in a society filled with parental controls. Life 360 is an app that allows parents to monitor every move their child makes at every moment of the day, essentially turning your phone into a pocket sized spy. That is invasive, but what if your car did it too?

The 2018 Chevy Malibu has a 1.5L turbocharged engine and a six speed automatic transmission. The 1.5L is small, but the turbo fills in the gaps left by the lower displacement. There is a 2.0L offered as well, if that is something you desire. The transmission is a tried-and-true automatic, not a CVT. I prefer this over the CVT because it feels more natural to me. Last but not least, the Malibu is front wheel drive.

The interior is nice, but not over the top. The infotainment screen is modern and fresh, but we will talk about that later. What’s missing from the interior is an “auto start/stop off” button. As someone who hates my car turning off at stoplights, this is incredibly frustrating. I don’t understand why the driver isn’t allowed to choose what their own car is doing, but oh well I guess.

Now, getting back to the infotainment system. The 2018 Malibu has tons of parental controls. For starters, the car will notify you when it passes a certain speed as well as the radio volume can be limited depending on who is driving. The car tells the corresponding phone app where it is at all times, how fast it traveled, and other metrics that help inform the owner. This all seems overbearing and an absolute hell-ish scenario for a high school student. However, there are some perks. Through the same app, information can be sent to the car wirelessly. Mainly, you can send a navigation point from your phone to the car. This is important for new drivers. Say a new driver is lost and unsure how to get home. The driver can message their parents and within seconds the center screen is telling them the fastest route home. This lowers the anxiety of the driver and gets them home safe without wasting time searching in the car. This should be incorporated in every car, making life just easier all around.

The Malibu is a great starter car. If you have a new driver, or you’re looking for your first “adult” car, the Malibu is a great option!
