In a world where Dodge has seemingly stuffed their 707hp hellcat engine into every chassis available, it’s easy to overlook those FCA vehicles that don’t feature that engine. It seems as though the Scat Pack and rumble bee Challengers have been tossed by the wayside by most car enthusiasts. Let me tell you why that is a very bad thing.
The 2017 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack has a 6.4L naturally aspirated V8 and a 6 speed manual transmission. To top it off, the Scat Pack has a hole cut in the hood to allow the shaker air intake to poke through. The V8 offers plenty of torque, and the manual transmission makes the car engaging to drive. The Hellcat I reviewed a while back was an automatic, so this was my first experience in a manual Challenger. I have to say, I loved it. The shifts felt nice and smooth, but at the same time they felt manly and wholesome. Rowing through the gears of a pissed off V8 is an amazing feeling, and the Scat Pack Challenger delivers that feeling, for a reduced cost. I’ll talk more about that later.
The interior of the scat pack is plush, comfortable, and modern. The Dodge performance pages in the infotainment system will tell you anything you want to know about the car such as horsepower, torque, top speed, drive modes, and so much more. The seats are very comfortable, as well as the interior just feels high quality. The only downside of the interior is the poor visibility, but that being said it has better visibility than some other muscle cars.
Now I have to hit it head on and compare the Scat Pack challenger to the Hellcat challenger I reviewed a while back. The main difference is obviously that the Scat Pack makes about 500hp while the Hellcat makes 707hp. But while driving the Scat Pack, I didn’t miss the power as much as I thought. The Scat Pack still has the grunt of a muscle car, which is helped out by the manual transmission. How often do you really plan on using the extra 200hp? You really don’t need it. And so the Scat Pack will give you 200 less horsepower, but also a hefty discount on top of that. If you’re looking to get into muscle cars, or if you just want a fun cruiser / daily driver then please take a look at the Challenger Scat Pack. If you’re self-conscious about your power, have money to throw away, and like it when people call you “Chief” then by all means, buy a hellcat.
