Police cars have always been a cause for panic here in America. In the 2000’s, the Crown Victoria was the normal run-of-the-mill police cruiser, but there was a scarier older brother to the Crown Vic: The Dodge Charger.
The 2008 Dodge Charger pursuit has a 5.7L v8 and 4 speed automatic transmission. The 5.7L Hemi is one of the two flavors of engine Dodge offers, the other being the 3.6L V6. The Hemi is a solid engine, offering enough power and torque to keep you happy, as well as offering cylinder deactivation to help with mileage on the highway. My only issue with the Hemi is that it no longer excites me. When I was a kid, which arguably wasn’t that long ago, the Hemi was an exciting word. It stood for something strong, powerful, and determined. In the early 2000’s, it meant all of those things. But over the last almost two decades, the Hemi has been offered in the Ram, Durango, Charger, Challenger, Magnum, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Commander, Chrysler 300C, Chrysler Aspen, and those are just the ones I can name off the top of my head. The 5.7L Hemi is used more than a bathroom in a foreign food restaurant. The transmission is a 4 speed, and it works like any other transmission should. The Charger isn’t particularly fast, but it has the grunt to keep going and going.
The interior is that of a fleet vehicle: bleak. The Charger Pursuit was meant to be used for long shifts, not date night on Saturday. The dashboard is very ergonomic, having every button and setting in the proper place for ease of use. To put it simply: Does it work? Yes. Is it nice: No.
The Charger Pursuit seems to be one of those “don’t meet your heroes” type of moments. As a kid I feared and respected the Charger. It was the brute, the unstoppable hemi-powered cop car. But after driving one, I realize that they are just fleet vehicles like the rest of the police cars. It has grunt, but not the comic-book-level aggression I expected from the Charger.
