I recently drove the 2018 Dodge Durango SRT for a review, if you’re not familiar with the Dodge Durango it is a mid-size 6-7 passenger SUV that is built off of the older Mercedes Benz GL 7 passenger SUV platform. This SUV is different from other competitors in this crowded class such as the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, Honda Pilot and the Ford Explorer. The Dodge Durango is the only rear wheel drive based 6-7 passenger crossover SUV on sale. If you want a rear wheel drive-based SUV your choices are limited to the GM based full size SUVs, Ford’s full-size SUVs along with Toyota’s and Nissan’s SUVs. All of those SUVs are 40% larger and start at 50K.
The Dodge Durango can be purchased for as low as $30,000 or less with rebates and market adjustments. The standard Durango comes with the bullet proof 3.6 Pentastar V6 with 290HP and the ZF designed 8 speed auto. You can also get it in rear wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Durango shares the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. As cool as the base GT or SXT Durango is we are not here to talk about that, we are here to talk about the fire breathing SRT version.
When I drove Corey’s Durango from the YouTube Channel Driveway Demons, I felt like I was driving my old R/T Durango with just more power. It was comfortable, predictable and FAST. When I use the term FAST, it is relative, and it is fast for any SUV on the market. Would it beat a GT-R, a Hellcat or a Demon? No, but it’s a 7 passenger SUV not a purpose-built race car. I do not like when people try to compare vehicles to other classes of vehicles. There’s no such thing as a vehicle that can do everything perfectly, but this Durango comes close for around $70,000. Is the Durango better than a Porsche at handling? No. Is it better than a Cadillac Escalade at hauling people? No. Is it better than a Mercedes Benz with interior comfort or design? No. It is better than all of them when you add up the sums of the parts then divide by cost.
