2018 BMW M550i – Maybe the Best Sedan Ever

Modern BMWs are nothing short of breathtaking. They have great performance, top shelf styling, and supreme interior quality. But if the 440i is amazing, then the M550i is amazing +10. So let’s break it down:

I hate the shifter in the M550i. Both 2018 models I’ve driven (as of 11/23/17) share the same ridiculous shifter. You pinch the side and pull backwards to put it into gear, but like a kid you’ve been asked to babysit, it’s never where you left it. It moves back to the center. Okay, I can get used to that, but then they made park a button. Just a button, and the car is in park. I know I’m only 20, but I guess I’m old school in wanting something more satisfying to be sure my car is actually in park and not move when I lift my foot off the brake. The other thing I hated was the stop/start feature. Both the 440i and M550i have a feature that turns the engine off at stoplights. I hate it. It’s annoying and interruptive. That being said, the M550i has a button that turns that off, which is by far that’s the easiest way to turn it off out of any car I’ve driven.

So with the negatives out of the way, let’s talk about the tidal wave of positives the M550i spills on anyone smart enough to get behind the wheel. Let’s start with the engine. The v8 twin turbo is amazing. It has tons of torque down low without boost, but once it kicks in, zoo wee mama. If you’re reading this before watching the video, skip to 0:43. The stock blow off valve is smile educing to say the least. Like silver bells ringing on Christmas, nothing makes me happier than an aggressive blow off valve.

The 8 speed ZF transmission is a gift to the automotive world. Also seen in the hellcat (Thank God, Chrysler can’t make a transmission if their life depended on it) the ZF is the only automatic transmission I’ve driven with that I actually really like. The blink of an eye is an eternity when compared to the shifting feel of a ZF trans.

The interior feels like a cigar lounge: plush and comfortable. I could go on and on about the comfort but I’ll spare you the details. The interior really strives in the technology sector. The center mounted touchscreen allows you to control whatever you want: a wireless charging pad, mood lighting, heated seats, and a sound system that makes a live concert seem bland are all controlled through the center screen. The interior isn’t a nice place to be, it’s THE place to be.

The M550i is the perfect driving machine. No words have been invented yet to describe how perfect the M550i is. Its fast, its comfortable, and it’s stylish. If you have the means of buying one, do it. You’ll thank me later.
